Why Montessori

21st Century Skills

Children learn through their hands and by exploring their environment. They learn by asking questions and then searching out the answers. Communication, collaboration, problem-solving, critical thinking, and creativity are 21st Century skills that are the hallmark of a Montessori education. At Meadowlark Montessori these skills form the backbone of our program.

Freedom of Movement and Choice

The Montessori Method allows for freedom of movement and freedom of choice in work, mirroring the real world and teaching the child how to be self-directed in learning. Rote memorization and busy work are set aside in favor of the hands-on Montessori materials and activities that allow for learning to take place through exploration, problem-solving, and critical thinking.

Lessons and Assessments

The beauty of the Montessori model is that students are given lessons based on their individual skills and level, rather than age or grade level. Most lessons are taught in small groups or individually.

The readiness of a child for a new concept can be assessed informally by the teacher, by mastery of a previous lesson, or by a formal assessment. Each child moves through the Montessori curriculum at their own individual pace.

We prioritize self-directed learning and following the child’s interests. Children are also encouraged to practice math and language arts at least once a day while at Meadowlark.

Meaningful Repetition

Scientific studies show that meaningful repetition can greatly increase the speed and depth of learning in children. This meaningful repetition includes: variation in the way a concept is practiced, incorporating movement, and hands-on activities. As many as 400 repetitions of rote memorization can be needed to create a new synapse versus 10-20 repetitions while playing or using meaningful repetition.

Many times the children think they are just playing at Meadowlark, all the while they are really learning meaningful concepts!

Montessori materials were created to incorporate all of these aspects of meaningful repetition. Many Montessori materials have a built-in control of error, showing the children they have made a mistake and allowing them to self-correct without a teacher.
